Court Upholds Decision for Waste Tanks in Meniko – Community Says Area is Overburdened

The Administrative Court has upheld the decision of state services to grant a building permit to A&A Slaughterhouses Ltd for the construction of four earthen tanks for storing treated liquid waste within the administrative boundaries of the Meniko community, in the province of Lefkosia. This decision came after an appeal by the Meniko Community Council, which sought to overturn the permit due to the already burdened area by livestock units and the potential for pollution. The court ruled that the Administration's decision was correct, as the project assessment proved that there were no significant negative impacts expected during the operation of the tanks, provided that the environmental conditions were met. Additionally, the court recalled that the project is additional to an already licensed slaughterhouse and that alternative site selection had already been evaluated. The Meniko community had argued that sufficient research was not conducted for alternative locations, but the court disagreed, emphasizing that the issue of site selection had been examined during the assessment of the basic permit. The court also dismissed the objection of insufficient conditions in the permit, as it believes that the environmental conditions are sufficient to protect the environment. The court's decision causes concern in the Meniko community, which believes that the area is already burdened by livestock units and that the construction of the tanks will worsen the situation. The Community Council is expected to consider its legal options to protect the area.
