Committee Fires at Presidential Office over Controversial Video – Piki: “500,000 Euros Not Ignored” – Discussions Ongoing with Potential Investor for ChatGPT in Schools

The House Institutions Committee strongly criticized the Presidential Office, examining the controversial video that circulated on social media and the operation of the Independent Social Support Agency. Deputy Minister to the President, Irene Piki, and Auditor General, Andreas Antoniadis, were called to provide explanations regarding reports of investors and donations to the Presidential Office. The Committee Chairman, Dimitris Dimitriou, warned against turning the hall into a court, while expressing concerns about meetings of state officials and the actions of Giorgos Lakkotrypis as a "lobbyist". Furthermore, the issue of the 500,000 euros and the general process of receiving sponsorships for the state was raised. Giorgos Loukaidis of AKEL accused the Presidential Office of illegal funding of the election campaign and creating a mechanism of collusion. Despite the Presidential Office's initial denial of the video's content, certain elements were confirmed, such as the intention to donate the 500,000 euros and the funding of the fire department by Remedica. The discussion also focused on the one million euro limit for the 2023 election campaign, which the government did not dispute. Mr. Loukaidis emphasized the difference between current practices and older ones, where transactions were made in cash. He also expressed the need for transparency regarding donations to the Social Support Agency, emphasizing that companies should want to advertise their contribution. In the future, the Committee will submit proposals for legislation regarding the Agency, either towards its abolition or towards strengthening its transparency and the publication of donors.
