Colombia: Nearly 30 Dead in Clashes Between Two Rebel Factions

Severe clashes between two factions of former FARC rebels in Colombia have resulted in the deaths of at least 27 people in the Guaviare department, in the Amazon region. The fighting is taking place between fighters under Iván Mordisco and another group led by Calarcá, both of whom reject the 2016 peace agreement. The clashes are due to a dispute over control of the area and income from drug trafficking, illegal mining, and extortion. The army reports that a recovery operation for the bodies has not yet been carried out for security reasons. The Iván Mordisco faction had held peace talks with the government but withdrew in 2024, while the Calarcá faction is also at an impasse in its negotiations.
