Coaching and Education: Methods, Intentions and the Role of Parents

Published February 9, 2026, 14:29

Following a serious incident of violence in a K12 match, where a parent punched a coach, a discussion took place on the “Alpha Enimerosi” show with representatives from the KOP (Cyprus Football Association) and the coaches' associations. Participants condemned the incident, characterizing it as isolated, while it was reported that the case has taken its legal course. Emphasis was placed on the need for coach training in pedagogical matters and the involvement of psychologists/technocrats to guide parents. It was proposed to establish a committee within the KOP to provide training and determine how matches are conducted. It was stressed that the development of children and their love for the sport are the primary goals. Coaches' associations are trying to train coaches in cooperation with the KOP and KOA (Cyprus Sports Organisation), while all stakeholders recognize the need for solutions. Additionally, it was reported that the child who experienced the incident is in shock, while his father has been arrested. The KOP has already trained 700 coaches in first aid and pledged not to remain idle.
