Civil Defence Issues Recommendations to Mitigate Weather-Related Risks

The Civil Defence Force has issued recommendations to the public regarding preparation and minimizing risks from strong thunderstorms and potential hail expected to affect the island. The recommendations primarily focus on flood prevention and include checking drains and gutters, removing items from basements, absorbing water into the soil, securing objects that may be swept away, and avoiding movement during heavy rainfall. In the event of a flood, it is recommended to evacuate from underground spaces and avoid crossing flooded roads. Additionally, the need to avoid power lines and areas with landslides is emphasized. After the flood, it is recommended to avoid flooded areas and be careful of broken roads and contaminated water. It is also warned of potential dangers from objects carried by the waters. The Civil Defence advises the public not to obstruct rescue teams and to use the telephone only in emergencies. Before restoring damage, it is recommended to confirm the safety of the area with the competent authorities. These recommendations were issued following an announcement from the Meteorological Department regarding isolated strong thunderstorms and aim to protect citizens and their property from the negative consequences of weather phenomena.
