Christodoulides: Standing Before You as the President of the Sole Member State Under Occupation – The Five Pillars of the Cypriot Presidency

President Christodoulides, addressing the European Parliament in Strasbourg, emphasized that he represents an EU member state under illegal occupation, highlighting the particular importance of territorial integrity for Europe, especially in relation to Ukraine and Greenland. He pointed out that Europe is facing a period of profound transformation, with the return of war to the continent due to Russian aggression and instability in the Middle East region. The President conveyed the EU's readiness to decisively address those who undermine its values and unity, stressing the need to respond to challenges in the “European way”. He referred to Robert Schuman, one of the architects of the EU, as a source of inspiration for commitment to European integration. He then presented the five pillars of priority for the Cypriot Presidency, the first of which concerns “Autonomy through Security, Defence and Preparedness”. In this context, he linked the situation in Cyprus, as the last member state under occupation, with the need to support Ukraine and seek sustainable peace. The President's speech emphasized the need for unity and determination in addressing the geopolitical and geoeconomic challenges facing Europe, with particular reference to the protection of territorial integrity and the support of member states under threat.
