Christodoulides Responds to Kalas on 'This is Not Europe's War'

President Christodoulides is expected to emphasize the importance of activating Article 42/7 for the EU and its member states during the European Council, particularly in relation to the crisis in Iran. This stance is a response to circles within the EU, including High Representative Josep Borrell, who argue that the war in Iran is not a European problem. Nicosia, in particular, appears to be dissatisfied with Borrell's statement, as it believes it underestimates the impact of the crisis on Cyprus, an EU member state. President Christodoulides has already publicly expressed his disagreement with these views. Government sources confirm that his statement is a direct response to Borrell. Cyprus is heavily invested in activating Article 42/7, which provides for mutual solidarity in the event of a threat to a member state. Despite initial reservations, Cyprus has received positive signals from Antonio Costa and Ursula von der Leyen, who appear willing to consider activating Article 42/7. Cyprus is not seeking immediate activation of the article, as immediate needs are covered by the support of Greece, France and Italy. Overall, Cyprus seeks to convince its partners of the need for a common European response to the crisis in Iran, emphasizing that European security and stability are directly affected by developments in the region.
