Christmas Villages in Cyprus: A Battle for a Spot and a Boost for Local Economies

Christmas Villages in Cyprus have evolved into a significant economic activity, providing support to remote communities and boosting winter tourism. The institution, which began around 15 years ago with local initiatives, was formalized in 2017 with the central coordination and funding taken over by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism. In 2025, eight Christmas Villages operated in various regions of Cyprus, attracting visitors and generating income for the communities and private individuals operating there. The revenue for communities from booth rentals can reach tens of thousands of euros, with the cost of renting a booth in some cases exceeding €4,000 for the entire operating period of the village. At the same time, private individuals operating the booths can generate substantial income, comparable to the revenues of a small catering business for a year. This has led to increased competition for securing a spot. However, some communities are seeking to maintain reasonable prices for the products and services offered, so that they are accessible to all citizens, regardless of their financial situation. This allows more families to enjoy the festive atmosphere and spend a pleasant day in the village. The success of the Christmas Villages institution demonstrates the importance of supporting local communities and promoting tourism in areas beyond the major urban centers. The continuation and further development of the institution is expected to contribute to the economic prosperity of Cyprus and the promotion of its cultural heritage.
