Child Rights Commissioner Condemns MEP's Offensive Remark

The Commissioner for the Protection of the Rights of the Child strongly condemned the remark made by MEP Fidias Panagiotou, which is considered offensive to people with intellectual disabilities. The Commissioner emphasized that this specific linguistic choice is unacceptable, demeaning, and stigmatizing, reproducing stereotypes and reinforcing social exclusion. She highlighted that language plays a crucial role in shaping perceptions and that the use of offensive terms by public officials carries institutional weight and can legitimize discrimination. The Commissioner called for serious reflection on how we express ourselves and intervene publicly, in order to promote respect for human dignity and equal participation for all. This statement comes in response to a public report by the MEP and aims to raise awareness about the importance of language and its impact on people with disabilities.
