Charalambidou Responds to AKEL: No Desire to Become Independent

Eirini Charalambidou responded to a statement from AKEL regarding her relationship with the party, emphasizing that the decision to remove her from the parliamentary group was made by the AKEL leadership and that she never expressed a desire to become independent. She claims that the statements made are aimed at eroding her personality to serve a party narrative and states that she will not participate in this confrontation. Ms. Charalambidou states that she has served the political life of the country for 15 years with the interest of the citizens and her conscience in mind, which has caused friction. She emphasizes that a politician must be accountable to their conscience and be ready to be judged for their beliefs. She expresses gratitude to the people of the Left and to all those who trusted her, stating that she will continue to serve them, as well as all Cypriot citizens. She believes that a politician must act for the general benefit, regardless of party affiliation. Regarding her parliamentary seat, she points out that MPs are elected by preferential vote and not by lists, emphasizing that the demand for resignation ignores the role of the voter. She reiterates that the decision to remove her from the parliamentary group was made by the AKEL leadership and that she does not wish to be involved in a confrontation aimed at polarization.
