Calls for Boycott of Venice Biennale Due to Israel's Participation

Israel's participation in the 2026 Venice Biennale has sparked strong reactions and calls for a boycott from artistic circles and activists. The international artistic coalition Art Not Genocide Alliance (ANGA) accuses Israel of genocide, occupation, and ethnic cleansing and demands its exclusion from the Biennale, threatening a full boycott. This decision comes two years after the 2024 Biennale, where the Israeli pavilion remained closed due to political tensions. The work Israel will present in 2026 is the sculpture “Rose of Nothingness” by Belu-Simion Fainaru. Due to renovation work, the Israeli participation will not take place in the traditional pavilion, but in the Arsenale, one of the main exhibition spaces. The debate surrounding Israel's participation highlights the question of the role of international art institutions in times of war and political crisis. Activists argue that the Biennale is not a neutral space and that national representation is linked to state policy. They believe that art cannot be separated from the material conditions that create and showcase it, and that Israel's presence legitimizes its policies.
