Bus Drivers Furious with Traffic Camera System, Announce 2-Hour Work Stoppage

Bus drivers, members of OMEPEGE – SEK and SEGDAMELIN – PEO, have decided to hold a 2-hour work stoppage on Friday, March 27th (09:00 – 11:00) in protest of the lack of a substantial solution to the problems caused by the traffic camera system. The unions have repeatedly warned the Ministry of Transport about the impact of the system on professional drivers. The drivers are requesting the installation of warning systems for red lights, in order to avoid sudden braking which endangers the safety of passengers. They point out that a bus, due to its size and weight, cannot be stopped suddenly, especially when carrying passengers who do not have seatbelts or are standing. The unions apologize for any inconvenience that may be caused to the public due to the work stoppage. The decision for the work stoppage was deemed necessary due to the Ministry of Transport's disregard for the drivers' repeated warnings and requests. The work stoppage is an attempt by the drivers to raise public and government awareness of the problems they face due to the traffic camera system and to push for the adoption of measures that will ensure the safety of passengers and drivers.
