Brussels Warned Cyprus of Potential Hybrid Threats

Published January 10, 2026, 19:14

Brussels warned Cyprus of potential hybrid threats during its presidency of the Council of the European Union. The warning, received from the European Commission's Information Secretariat 3-4 months ago, came shortly before the circulation of a video considered a product of malicious editing and organized propaganda. The video, posted on the 'Emily Thompson' account, contains a combination of real footage with edited audio and images. Authorities believe the video bears the hallmarks of organized Russian disinformation campaigns, specifically the Doppelganger campaign identified since 2021. These campaigns have previously targeted Western countries, such as the US before the 2020 presidential election, and EU member states during periods of significant milestones. The main goal of these campaigns is character assassination and causing political cost to Western governments. Cyprus, having taken over the EU presidency, appears to have become a target, with the video emerging just hours after taking office. The government is investigating the matter and trying to identify those responsible for creating and spreading the video, while emphasizing the importance of vigilance against such threats.
