Brussels: EU Considers Mutual Assistance Clause for Cyprus, But No Activation Yet

The European Union is considering activating the mutual assistance clause for Cyprus, but has not yet made a decision. The head of the European Commission's spokesperson, Paula Pinio, stated that the issue will be discussed in the coming days at various meetings. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, contacted President Christodoulides and stressed that the EU stands by Cyprus against any threat. The mutual assistance clause provides that in the event of an armed attack on a member state, the other member states are obliged to assist it with all available means. Successive consultations are being scheduled in Brussels on the crisis, with a teleconference of the 27 Foreign Ministers having already taken place.
