British Destroyer HMS Dragon Arrives in the Mediterranean – Passes Through the Strait of Gibraltar

The British Royal Navy's Type 45 destroyer HMS Dragon sailed into the Mediterranean Sea and reached Gibraltar on Tuesday (17/3), continuing its mission towards the Eastern Mediterranean and Akrotiri. The ship was spotted near the Strait of Gibraltar as it crossed the Atlantic. The mission of HMS Dragon aims to strengthen the protection of British personnel and infrastructure, including the military base at Akrotiri. The deployment of the ship is linked to the recent drone strike on the British base at Akrotiri on March 1st. British authorities are investigating the origin of the drone, with the possibility that it is of Iranian manufacture with Russian technology, launched from Lebanon or Iraq. The incident highlighted the need to strengthen the security of the base. Beyond air defense, HMS Dragon can undertake multiple missions, such as providing humanitarian aid and responding to natural disasters. The crew consists of more than 200 personnel, with specialized staff for various operations, such as target detection, helicopter maintenance and weapons systems handling. HMS Dragon has a displacement of approximately 8,000 tons and has advanced anti-aircraft defense systems, capable of dealing with multiple air threats simultaneously. Its arrival is part of a broader effort to strengthen the British presence in the region, with the deployment of other helicopters and air forces.
