Bolsonaro to be Discharged and Return to Prison After Surgery

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is expected to be discharged from the clinic where he is being treated for a hernia and return to his cell to serve his 27-year prison sentence for attempted coup d'état. His condition after the surgery is good, according to his doctors. Bolsonaro has undergone several surgeries in recent years due to injuries sustained from a stabbing in 2018. He recently underwent three surgeries to treat persistent hiccups, which have worsened his psychological state. Bolsonaro's lawyers are requesting that he serve his sentence under house arrest, citing his deteriorating health condition. He was also recently diagnosed with skin cancer. Bolsonaro was convicted of attempted coup d'état in September, following his defeat in the 2022 elections to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
