Blow to Turkey: Iran Reportedly Cuts Off Natural Gas Supply

Turkey is facing a potential problem with its energy security, as Iran is reportedly cutting off natural gas exports to the country, following the Israeli attack on the South Pars field. Turkey covered approximately 14% of its natural gas needs from Iran last year, making this development significant. Despite the reports, Turkish sources state that there is currently no immediate risk of disruption to the supply, as flows from Russia (via TurkStream and Blue Stream) and Azerbaijan (via TANAP) continue normally. In addition, gas reserves in Silivri and Tuz Golu are considered sufficient to cover short- and medium-term needs. Tehran had already cut off gas exports to Iraq, aiming to manage increased domestic demand and protect its reserves. The interruption of exports to Turkey appears to serve the same purpose. This development comes at a time of increased geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East, with potential implications for the energy market and the Turkish economy. Turkish authorities are closely monitoring the situation and considering alternative solutions to ensure the country's energy sufficiency.
