BirdLife Cyprus: 726,000 Birds Killed Illegally in 2025 – What the Data Shows

A new report from BirdLife Cyprus estimates that 726,000 birds were killed illegally in Cyprus in 2025. Netting increased by 4% compared to 2024, while in the Dhekelia British Bases, there was a 55% increase due to a change in police tactics. Conversely, netting in the Republic of Cyprus decreased by 47% after targeted police operations and international exposure of the problem. However, trapping with limesticks remains at high levels due to reduced fines. BirdLife Cyprus emphasizes that consistent enforcement of the law yields results, but weakening police presence leads to an increase in illegal trapping. In addition, the arson of vehicles of the Game and Fauna Service indicates that illegal trapping has evolved into a profitable activity. The organization calls for continued and targeted enforcement of the law, stricter penalties for the use of limesticks, and enhanced protection of birds.
