Bill to Curb Money Laundering Through Real Estate

The Ministry of Finance is promoting a bill to strengthen supervision in the real estate sector, aiming to prevent money laundering. Supervision of real estate agents will be transferred from the Council for Registration of Real Estate Agents to the Tax Commissioner, who will also supervise other professionals in the industry not covered by other authorities. The choice of the Tax Department was based on its existing experience and competence in real estate transactions and money laundering, as well as the lower implementation cost. The bill aligns with European directives and Cyprus's policy to combat financial crime.
