Avalanche Hits Ski Resort in France, Skiers Buried

A large avalanche struck a ski resort in Chamonix, France, sweeping skiers off their feet. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon on the La Flégère slope, with a massive 'wall' of snow descending from the slopes. Three people were buried up to their necks but were rescued unharmed by rescue teams. The rescue operation was extensive, involving around 60 people and specially trained dogs. Heavy snowfall and a blizzard the previous week had increased the risk of avalanches in the area, and experts warn that this winter is particularly dangerous in Europe, with a higher number of deaths from avalanches. The unstable conditions are due to a weak layer of snow beneath heavier layers.
