Australia Declares State of Disaster as Bushfires Rage

Authorities in the Australian state of Victoria have declared a state of disaster due to the worsening of bushfires that have been raging for days. A heatwave with temperatures exceeding 40°C and strong winds have contributed to the rapid spread of the fires, destroying approximately 1.5 million acres of forest near Longwood. The declaration of a state of disaster gives fire authorities the power to order mandatory evacuations. At least 130 buildings have been destroyed, and ten major fires remain active, with estimates that it will take days or even weeks to bring them under control. The fires are attributed to the increase in temperature in Australia by 1.51°C since 1910, which is leading to more frequent extreme weather events.
