Audit Report Reveals Issues in Emergency Departments

The Audit Office found non-compliance with internal procedures and administrative weaknesses in the Accident and Emergency Departments (A&E) of the General Hospitals of Nicosia, as discussed in the House of Representatives Control Committee. Specifically, problems were identified in the patient admission process, the signing of forms by trainee doctors instead of specialists, and the remote diagnosis of X-rays without a comprehensive legal framework. Michalis Vasiliou, Director of the Health Branch of the Audit Office, stated that the situation in Limassol was better, while emphasizing the legal risks arising from the incorrect completion of forms. In addition, he referred to a malfunction in the CT scanner of Nicosia Hospital, which has been replaced but has not yet been put into operation. The Audit Office also found delays in the preparation of medical reports and the use of overtime compensation for radiologists, a practice that the administration intends to terminate. Furthermore, it was reported that the waiting time for patients in the A&E increases due to the limited availability of doctors in the morning hours. The General Executive Director of OKYPY, Kypros Stavridis, acknowledged the need to update the operating manual of the A&E and emphasized the pressure faced by doctors.
