Athens at the Crossroads of US-Israel Relations: Arms Deals, Turkey, and the Eastern Mediterranean

Greece is at the center of growing interest from the US and Israel, as Washington seeks to strengthen its position in the southeastern Mediterranean. The US expects greater Greek participation and funding in arms programs of American origin, while the possibility of a Mitsotakis-Trump meeting is being considered. The Greek government maintains a discreet stance on international issues, but is expected to oppose the US in the event of an escalation of the crisis around Greenland. At the same time, the US is trying to act as a mediator between Turkey and Israel, with US officials pressing Netanyahu to normalize relations with Erdogan, especially in the Syrian field. The recent Greece-Cyprus-Israel trilateral meeting was not met with enthusiasm in Washington, as it was considered to undermine efforts for Turkish-Israeli relations. Furthermore, the US side expresses discomfort with Greece's choices in the field of armaments, as Greece has turned primarily to France and Israel for major arms programs, despite the order of the F-35s. Athens is seeking alternative channels of communication with the White House, even by reconsidering cooperation with a lobbying firm. Overall, Greece is in a complex geopolitical environment, where it is called upon to manage the expectations and pressures from the US, Israel and Turkey, while at the same time seeking to promote its national interests in the Eastern Mediterranean.
