Artificial Intelligence and Political Responsibility: A Holistic and Progressive Approach is Essential, Says Annita

The President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, emphasized the importance of political responsibility for regulating artificial intelligence (AI) during an Inter-Parliamentary Meeting organized by the House of Representatives, within the framework of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU. She stated that AI plays a crucial role in the modern era and impacts many areas of life, offering significant opportunities, especially for younger generations in research, education, healthcare, and public services. However, Ms. Demetriou highlighted that the challenges accompanying AI require a holistic and progressive approach, in line with the European regulatory framework and European values. She explained that AI systems are trained based on human data, which can lead to the reproduction of biases and social inequalities. The correct and responsible use of AI is, according to Ms. Demetriou, critical to ensure that technology serves the public interest. She warned of the risks of uncontrolled AI use, such as the spread of fake news, misinformation, manipulation of public opinion, and undermining democratic processes, especially concerning younger generations. Finally, the President of the House of Representatives mentioned that the European Union considers AI a key pillar of its digital strategy and must lead in establishing and implementing a unified regulatory framework, pioneering in this field.
