Anti-Corruption Authority Responds to Lawyer Regarding Former Fisheries Director

The Independent Authority Against Corruption responded to the lawyer of the former Director of the Fisheries Department, Alexandra Lycourgos, denying any intention to target her client, Loizos Loizides, in the case of the illegal fish farm in Trimiklini. The Authority emphasizes that its announcement was based on a multi-page report (275 pages) and that the presumption of innocence was not violated, as it only refers to "potential criminal liabilities". The Authority's letter points out that the announcement is a concise representation of the report's findings and that any revision would require modification of the report itself, which is practically impossible. It also assures that there is no adverse treatment of Loizides compared to other public officials, as all three individuals considered politically exposed persons (PEPs) were named in the announcement. The Authority reminds the lawyer that the wording regarding "potential criminal liabilities" is expressly provided for by law and the regulations governing its operation. It also points out that the Transparency Commissioner and the Inspector have a judicial background and understand the importance of respecting the presumption of innocence. Due to the lawyer's public release of her letter, the Authority proceeded to publish its response, maintaining transparency and public information. It reiterates its position that tackling corruption is crucial for the proper functioning of the state and public trust.
