Antarctica: Submarine Discovers Strange Structures and Then... Vanishes

An unmanned submarine, Ran, discovered strange structures beneath the Dotson ice shelf in Antarctica before disappearing at a depth of 16 kilometers. The structures include flat plateaus, step-like ridges, and tear-shaped cavities formed by ice melt. The research, led by Professor Anna Volin, aimed to study the erosion of ice shelves by ocean currents. The submarine mapped 54 square miles of the ice shelf surface, revealing differences in melting between the eastern and western sides. The data shows that warm deep water primarily erodes the western side, while colder waters protect the eastern side. The ridges were formed by slow melting, while the channels and cavities were formed by rapid flow and turbulence. The discovery of these structures, which are not visible from satellites, provides new information about the dynamics of ice melt in Antarctica and sea level rise.
