Animal Welfare: Increased Abandonment, Abuse, and Insufficient Shelter Infrastructure

The Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare, Antonia Theodosiou, highlighted serious problems in the field of animal welfare in Cyprus, such as uncontrolled reproduction, low marking rates, deficiencies in the implementation of legislation, abandonment and abuse of animals, as well as a lack of shelter infrastructure. Ms. Theodosiou presented a comprehensive Plan of Measures and Actions for the welfare of dogs and cats, which has been submitted to the competent Ministries for consideration. The plan includes proposals for mass sterilization and marking, strengthening shelters, creating regional custody facilities by local authorities, enhanced enforcement of legislation, creating public veterinary services and public education. She emphasized the crucial role of local government and expects the passage of the amended Dog Law to strengthen the institutional framework.
