Angelides: Senior Official Targeted for Reporting Corruption

The legal counsel of a senior official from the Paphos Municipality, Sigmos Angelides, appeared on the show "Protosevido" to analyze the recent court vindication of his client, as well as the complaints she has filed against the suspended mayor, Phaedon Phaedonos. The case began in 2022 and involves multiple court appeals, as the official had been dismissed twice, winning both times in court. The court found a serious violation of the principle of impartiality in the latest dismissal. Mr. Angelides emphasized that the official was targeted due to her corruption complaints, which concerned the Municipal Secretary and the Mayor. The complaints include physical violence, workplace bullying, but also criminal offenses such as the management of Turkish Cypriot properties, problematic hirings, and the misappropriation of funds from pension funds. Mr. Angelides denounced the fact that the official did not receive the protection provided by the legal framework for whistleblowers, despite having reported serious offenses. He pointed out that investigations into the complaints are ongoing and results are expected by the end of March. In addition, Mr. Angelides mentioned that there are three distinct aspects of investigations concerning the mayor of Paphos, which relate to various management issues and possible illegalities. The case is ongoing and more details are expected to be revealed in the future.
