Andreas Poullikkas: Cyprus Could Consider Using Nuclear Energy

Professor of Energy Systems Andreas Poullikkas states that Cyprus could consider using nuclear energy, especially through small modular reactors (SMRs), as part of a comprehensive energy transition strategy. The discussion on nuclear energy is returning to the European agenda due to the need for energy security and zero emissions. SMRs offer advantages such as lower cost, increased safety, and installation flexibility. However, there are challenges such as cost, waste, social acceptance, and institutional gaps. For Cyprus, nuclear energy could strengthen the reliability of the energy system, hydrogen production, and desalination, but requires long-term planning, institutional protection, investment, and political/social consensus.
