Anatomy of an Invasion: A New Book on the 1974 Cyprus Crisis

The book "Cyprus 1974: Anatomy of an Invasion" by Professors Vasilis Fouskas and William Mallinson, soon to be published by Epikentro and already by Routledge, provides an in-depth examination of the critical events in Cyprus in 1974, starting with the Turkish invasion. The research is based on extensive study of archival material from Britain, the United States, and Greece, as well as existing literature. The authors analyze the choices and maneuvers of Archbishop Makarios III, from the attempt to internationalize the Cyprus issue to the acceptance of federation, as well as the role of other actors during the summer of 1974. The book, comprising 208 pages and 16 chapters, examines the historical context of the events, starting from Constantinople in 1922 and the rise of Turkish sub-imperialism. It also analyzes the relationship between NATO forces and Cyprus, as well as Makarios's effort for independence from NATO. The analysis extends to the situation in Greece during the dictatorship and the involvement of the Greco-Turkish junta in the Cypriot events. Introductory reviews from distinguished professors of International Relations, such as Marios Evriviades, Alan Cafruny, Bülent Gökay, and Tunc Aybak, highlight the originality and value of the research. The book also includes photographs, maps, and a presentation of the key protagonists of the period. Vasilis Fouskas has previously published the monograph "The Melanoma of Cyprus. The responsibilities of Konstantinos Karamanlis and Evangelos Averof for the Cypriot tragedy", while William Mallinson has written the book "Kissinger and the Invasion of Cyprus: Diplomacy in the Eastern Mediterranean". Their new work aims to provide a comprehensive and objective picture of the events that led to the Turkish invasion and its consequences.
