Amsterdam: Tower of Historic Church Collapses After Fire

The tower of the historic Vondelkerk church in Amsterdam collapsed in the early hours of New Year's Day, after a fire broke out shortly after midnight. Parts of the 154-year-old church's spire had already collapsed two hours prior. Surrounding homes were evacuated due to the launch of ash and wood, while firefighters warned residents by ringing bells. The Vondelkerk church was built in 1872 and had not been functioning as a church since 1977, but had been used for special purposes. The fire was likely caused by fireworks used by groups of young people.
