AKEL General Secretary: War Must End Soon

The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, stated that the war must end as soon as possible, reiterating the party's position on ending the presence of British bases in Cyprus. He also called on the government to prepare to deal with the consequences of the war, such as a decline in tourism and rising oil prices. Mr. Stefanou expressed his concern about the impact of the war on ordinary people and wage earners. Speaking to workers at the Nicosia General Hospital, the AKEL General Secretary stressed that Cyprus has become a target due to the presence of British bases and reiterated the need to end their presence. He emphasized that the Government must begin planning to address the economic consequences of the war, such as declining tourism and rising energy costs. Referring to the issue of health, Mr. Stefanou described the Nicosia General Hospital as the “flagship of public health” and pledged AKEL’s support for the health sector. He stressed the need for universal access to quality healthcare, warning of the problems that arise in countries where health depends on private insurance. Stefanos Stefanou called for immediate action to end the war and address its consequences, in order to protect ordinary people and ensure the prosperity of Cyprus.
