AKEL Calls for Protocol Adjustment to Prevent Mass Animal Culling

The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, stated that the protocol for foot-and-mouth disease should be adapted to the Cypriot reality and called on the European Union to avoid the mass culling of animals not diagnosed with the virus. He made this statement after a meeting with livestock farmers in Aradippou, where strong indignation was expressed regarding low compensation and the need to adjust the protocol. The livestock farmers are protesting the low compensation, which does not reflect the market value of the animals, and are demanding to be compensated at real market prices. Additionally, they desire the adaptation of the protocol to the Cypriot reality, in order to avoid the mass culling of animals, which could affect the production of products such as halloumi. Mr. Stefanou mentioned that AKEL will request the European Union to avoid mass culling and will try to coordinate with other parties to put pressure on the government. He also expressed the disappointment of the livestock farmers regarding the government's slow response to their requests. EKA, through its General Secretary Panikos Chambas, described the situation as “very difficult” and emphasized the importance of politicians’ contact with the livestock farming community to hear their problems firsthand.
