AKEL Calls for Investigation into Video Allegations, Accuses Government of Deflection

AKEL has initiated procedures for an ex officio investigation into the revelations contained in a video concerning the Director of the President's Office and two other individuals. According to the party's General Secretary, Stefanos Stefanou, the video demonstrates the operation of cash funding mechanisms outside public control, the servicing of businessmen in exchange for contributions, and the circumvention of European sanctions. Mr. Stefanou emphasized that the sums involved are substantial and that the government is focusing on the origin of the video instead of examining its content. He also referred to the case of the First Lady's fund, for which the Presidential Palace refused to disclose donors. AKEL is calling on the institutions to operate impartially and objectively and has submitted a bill to abolish the First Lady's fund.
