Akathistos Hymn Sung in Constantinople Where It Originated 1,400 Years Ago

The Akathistos Hymn was sung by a large crowd of worshippers in Constantinople, at the Panagia Vlahernon, the very place where it was first sung approximately 1,400 years ago. The ceremony revived a significant moment in Orthodox tradition, connecting the past with the present. According to historical accounts, in 626, during the Avar invasion, Patriarch Sergius carried the icon of the Virgin Mary around the city walls, and a storm destroyed the enemy fleet. In gratitude, the faithful sang the Akathistos Hymn for the first time then.
