Adjournment of German Real Estate Agent’s Bail Request Due to Insurance Issue

The hearing of the case of alleged usurpation of Greek Cypriot properties in the occupied territories against the German real estate agent continued at the Nicosia Criminal Court. During the session, a cross-examination of a witness by the defense took place, focusing on the discrepancies in the topographic maps of the disputed plots. The defense argues that the discrepancies are significant, while the witness, a land registry and surveying expert, explained that the Land Registry cannot conduct surveying work in occupied Kyrenia and uses old plans. A request by the defense for a written translation of the testimonies into German was rejected as “vague and delayed” and oral interpretation was available. However, the examination of the request for the defendant’s bail was adjourned due to an obstacle in communicating with the insurance company to settle the issue. The defense emphasized the need for translation of the testimonies citing a European Directive, while the Prosecution Authority mentioned relevant Cypriot case law. The Court pointed out that clear instructions had been given for arranging meetings with a translator through the protocol. The case continues and further issues that arose during today's hearing are expected to be examined, including the bail request and the accuracy of the topographic maps.
