A Leader Without Mandate

Tufan Erhürman, leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, referred to the convergences achieved before the Crans-Montana negotiations, highlighting the limitations of the negotiating power of Turkish Cypriot leaders, who follow the instructions of Ankara. Ankara, after the failure of Crans-Montana, promoted a narrative that allowed it to terminate negotiations, refusing to discuss issues of security and guarantees. Turkish Cypriot leaders have limited authority, confined to matters of internal governance and not to issues concerning the interests of Turkey.
