52% Acceptance Rate for Financial Ombudsman Decisions in 2025

The acceptance rate of decisions issued by the Financial Ombudsman increased significantly in 2025, reaching 52% from 20% in previous years. Commissioner Valentina Georgiadou presented the figures to the Parliamentary Committee on Finance, noting that one of the two systemic banks rarely rejects her decisions. Simultaneously, the amount of overcharges returned by banks increased, reaching €430,000 in 2025 from €170,000 in 2023. The number of complaints submitted to the Ombudsman decreased in 2025, while requests outside its jurisdiction increased, mainly for foreclosure suspensions. The Commissioner expressed her view that she does not oppose the possibility of her decisions becoming binding, but proposes a gradual approach, starting with smaller amounts. The Ombudsman's budget for 2026 is deficit, but will be covered by equivalent cash reserves.
