45 Potentially Habitable Exoplanets Discovered

A new study published in the journal 'Monthly Notices' of the Royal Astronomical Society has identified 45 exoplanets considered potentially habitable. Researchers, using data from the European Space Agency's Gaia mission and NASA's Exoplanet Archive, focused on planets located within the habitable zone around their stars – a distance that allows for the potential existence of liquid water on their surfaces. Among the standout planets are Proxima Centauri b, TRAPPIST-1f, and Kepler 186f, as well as TRAPPIST-1d, e, f and g, and LHS 1140b. The presence of liquid water on these planets depends on their ability to retain an atmosphere. This discovery is expected to guide future astronomical observations using telescopes such as the James Webb, the Extremely Large Telescope, and the Habitable Worlds Observatory. Observing the atmospheres of these planets is crucial to confirming the possibility of life. This research comes at a time when public imagination has been sparked by the film 'Passengers', which depicts the search for habitable planets to save Earth. The new list of exoplanets provides a realistic basis for further exploration and research.
