300,000 Doses of Drugs Intended for the Market – Revelations from the Cypriot Drug Enforcement Agency, Prisons Also Under Scrutiny

The Cypriot Drug Enforcement Agency (YKAN) is on alert following the discovery of 993 sheets of A4 paper impregnated with narcotics at the home of a 68-year-old man in Larnaca. This is the largest case of its kind ever investigated by the Agency in Cyprus, with estimates of around 300,000 doses of drugs prevented from entering the market, with a potential profit of approximately €1.5 million for the traffickers. Authorities suspect that the 68-year-old was the main source of supply for the drugs to various locations. The substance found is a synthetic narcotic belonging to the cannabinoid category (MDMB), much stronger than cannabis and with dangerous psychotropic effects. The sheets of paper are undetectable and odorless, making their trafficking more difficult. YKAN is investigating whether part of the quantity was intended for convicts or detainees in the Central Prisons, as such impregnated sheets of paper are usually found in the possession of prisoners. At the same time, it is cooperating with Interpol and Europol to identify the origin of the drugs and their final destination. Investigations are focusing on the possibility that the drugs were imported from abroad. The 68-year-old, who had no previous involvement with YKAN, has been taken into custody. The case is being treated with the utmost seriousness and is expected to shed light on a wider network of drug trafficking in Cyprus.
