22 Migrants Dead After Six Days at Sea off Greece

A tragic shipwreck occurred off the coast of Greece, resulting in the deaths of 22 migrants who had been adrift in a dinghy for six days without food or water. The 26 survivors, including a woman and a minor, stated that the bodies of the deceased were thrown into the sea on the orders of the smugglers. The survivors are from Bangladesh, South Sudan, and Chad. Two of them were transported to a hospital in Heraklion. The dinghy had departed from Tobruk, heading for Greece, a common entry point for migrants seeking asylum in the European Union. Greek authorities have arrested two men from South Sudan, accused of illegal entry into the country and negligent homicide. The incident comes amid an increase in migrant flows to Europe, with the number of deaths in the Mediterranean having more than doubled in the first two months of 2024 compared to the previous year. Simultaneously, the European Parliament approved stricter immigration policies, including the creation of 'return centers' in third countries.
