13,920 Animals to Be Culled Despite Only 110 Confirmed Cases of Foot and Mouth Disease

An outbreak of foot and mouth disease has led to the culling of 13,920 animals, despite only 110 being confirmed as infected. This decision is sparking intense debate about the necessity and ethics of culling healthy animals as a preventative measure. Senior Veterinary Officer Sotiria Georgiou explains that the animals are being culled because the virus is highly contagious, even in animals without symptoms. However, many consider this decision barbaric, given scientific advancements and the potential for alternative methods of controlling the disease. European Directive 2003/85/EC provides for the culling of infected animals but does not cover the culling of entire herds. Ms. Georgiou states that the culling is due to the reduction in milk production and the difficulty of recovery for infected animals, but this is not enough to justify such a drastic decision in the eyes of farmers and the public. Moreover, there is criticism that the blame is being placed on farmers engaged in illegal transactions with the occupied territories, without considering other potential causes.
