105 Specialized Treatments Integrated into Cyprus's National Health System

Over the past year, 105 specialized treatments previously administered through the cumbersome process of individual requests have been incorporated into the Cyprus National Health System (GeSY) pharmaceutical list. This integration followed the completion of protocols and negotiations with pharmaceutical companies regarding reimbursement. Some protocols have been revised to cover a wider range of patients, such as in oncology where drugs are now available for more cancer types. The included treatments address various conditions, including cancer, hematological disorders, kidney diseases, diabetes, neurological illnesses, AIDS, and rare diseases. The drug dispensing process has become more flexible, with approval requests based on criteria, avoiding the previous bottlenecks of individual requests. The integration process is ongoing, but often delayed due to disagreements with pharmaceutical companies over reimbursement rates. Priority is given to treatments that benefit a large number of patients. The inclusion of these therapies in GeSY significantly reduces the workload of the Individual Requests Committee, as fewer applications are submitted. Many of these treatments were integrated en masse in the last three months, following successful negotiations with pharmaceutical companies. This development is expected to facilitate patient access to essential therapies and improve the functionality of GeSY.
