EU Commissioner Várhelyi: No Relaxation of FMD Regulations, Culling Continues

European Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare, Oliver Várhelyi, held meetings in Cyprus regarding the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak. He stressed that the EU regulation on FMD will be implemented without any relaxation, despite pressure from agricultural organizations and livestock farmers to end the mass culling of animals. Mr. Várhelyi met with the Minister of Agriculture, livestock farmers, and representatives of state services, emphasizing the importance of fully implementing European protocols to avoid greater economic consequences. He pointed out that FMD is the most devastating animal disease and that all animals on infected farms must be culled. After meeting with the President of the Republic, Mr. Várhelyi stated that the European Union will help Cypriot livestock farmers. President Christodoulides will hold a meeting with all stakeholders to discuss the situation. Livestock farmers had held a protest against the mass culling, expressing their opposition to the practice. The European Commissioner expressed the European Commission's solidarity with the competent authorities in Cyprus through a social media post.
