When Treatment Becomes a Monthly Financial Struggle

Increasing financial pressure is being placed on pensioners due to the rising cost of medication, turning even basic treatments into an unbearable monthly burden. Recent changes in drug contributions to the GHS have sparked reactions from patient organizations, pensioners, and doctors, while the HIO is in consultations to find solutions. According to the General Secretary of EKYSY, Evtychios Papamichael, the cost of medication is one of the most serious problems for pensioners, especially those with low pensions, during a period of general price increases. Complaints concern significant increases in anticoagulants and medications not covered by the GHS but are essential. The daily lives of patients are reflected in examples, such as the 87-year-old Andreas who spends over 50 euros a month on supplements alone, and the 75-year-old Maria who sees her monthly medication costs exceeding 40 euros. These increases significantly burden low-income pensioners. The senior official of the HIO, Sofia Petridou, explains that the increases are linked to price reductions in original drugs after patent expiration and the introduction of generics, which are used as a basis for calculating patient contributions. This results in other categories of drugs showing increased participation.
