When Mohammed Doesn't Go to the Mountain...

Public education in Cyprus is facing a serious crisis, with increasing incidents of violence, delinquency, and threats to teachers. Teachers, through POED, feel they are bearing the burden of managing social problems that exceed their pedagogical responsibilities. The Ministry of Education, while recognizing the problems, is moving at a slow pace and is unable to implement substantial solutions. The situation in schools has deteriorated, with verbal and physical bullying, attacks by parents, and targeting of teachers through anonymous complaints. The school has become a place that is called upon to address family problems, psychosocial difficulties, and phenomena of addiction, without adequate support. The lack of psychologists and the inadequate functioning of intervention structures further burden teachers, who are called upon to manage crises and act as social workers and mediators. Responsibility is constantly shifted to teachers, without addressing the root causes of the problem. POED has submitted specific proposals to address the crisis, but solving the problem requires coordinated state policy, adequate staffing, a clear legal framework, and substantial protection of teachers. Addressing the crisis cannot be limited to communication declarations and circulars, but requires immediate and structural interventions.
