Falling Fertility Rates Across Europe – Which Countries Are Experiencing the Biggest Declines and Cyprus's Position

Fertility rates across Europe are continuing to decline, reaching levels lower than those of the 1960s. The total fertility rate in the European Union fell to 1.34 in 2024, almost half of what it was in 1964 (2.62). Cyprus ranks 26th among 42 countries, with a fertility rate of 1.38. Significant variations are observed in fertility rates between European countries, with Malta having the lowest (1.01) and Bulgaria the highest (1.72) within the EU. France has the highest rate among major economies (1.61), while Spain and Italy record the lowest (1.10 and 1.18 respectively). The decline in fertility is due to factors such as access to education, contraception, and changes in lifestyle. The EU is not alone in facing this problem, as similar phenomena are observed in other parts of the world. The number of countries with a fertility rate below the replacement level (2.1) is expected to increase significantly in the coming years. According to Eurostat, all European countries have been below the replacement level since 2024. This situation raises concerns about the future of the population and economic growth in Europe.
