Digital Innovation for Protecting Cultural Heritage from Climate Change

The University of Frederick is pioneering the use of digital innovation to protect cultural heritage from the effects of climate change. Members of the academic staff of the Department of Architecture, Mr. Argyris Fellas and Dr. Grigoris Kalnis, created a 3D Model and Digital Twin of the Temple of Apollo Hylates, a significant ancient temple in Cyprus. This creation was made using advanced equipment from the university and was presented at the Information Day of the European project HERIT ADAPT, which focuses on the resilience of cultural heritage to climate change and sustainable tourism. The Digital Twin is a high-precision virtual representation of the monument, providing valuable data for research and study purposes. This technology allows for the early detection of damage caused by climate change, the design of effective conservation interventions, and the support of sustainable tourism development. In addition, the Digital Twin can be used for educational, research, and social purposes through interactive digital applications. Mr. Fellas emphasized the continued contribution of the University of Frederick to research and the application of innovative technologies for the protection and sustainable utilization of cultural heritage. The HERIT ADAPT event was organized by the Limassol Tourism Development and Promotion Company and brought together representatives of Local Government, the Department of Antiquities, academics, and experts in the field of sustainable development. The University of Frederick, with a 60-year history in education, has been operating since 2007 as an internationally recognized higher education institution. It offers more than 80 study programs in various fields and has been ranked among the top globally in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2025, confirming its commitment to academic excellence, research, innovation, and contribution to society.
