High Dust Levels in the Atmosphere - The Most Affected City

High dust concentrations are being observed in the atmosphere across Cyprus today, Monday, according to measurements from the Department of Labour Inspection. The dust, due to its small particle size, may have negative health effects, so the public, especially vulnerable groups (children, the elderly, and patients), are advised to avoid going out in open spaces until the phenomenon subsides. Employers are called upon to take the necessary protective measures for their employees working in outdoor areas, in accordance with the relevant decree of 2022. These workers should use appropriate personal protective equipment. The measurements at 10:00 a.m. showed the highest dust concentrations in Paphos (191.0 μg/m3), followed by Limassol (133.0 μg/m3) and Paralimni (83.8 μg/m3). The other areas recorded the following values: Nicosia (40.1 μg/m3), Larnaca (65.1 μg/m3), Zygi (42.7 μg/m3) and Agia Marina Xyliatou (53.5 μg/m3). According to the Department of Labour Inspection, dust is defined as inhalable particles with a diameter of less than 10 μm (PM10). The limit value for the average daily concentration is 50 μg/m3.
