Christodoulides and Meloni Discuss Action Plan in Energy, Defence and Culture

President Christodoulides and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni discussed an action plan in areas such as energy, defense and culture, with the aim of strengthening bilateral relations. Nicosia aims to bring its relations with Italy to the same level as those it has with France. The decision to sign a strategic agreement, the common interest in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and Italy's recognition of Cyprus's contribution at European level were the main points of the meeting. Cyprus already has strategic agreements with other countries and seeks to extend this cooperation with Italy as well. Italy recognizes Cyprus as an important actor in the region and has agreed to start discussions on an action plan covering areas of high politics. The signing of the action plan is expected before or on the sidelines of the informal European Council in April. In addition, the two countries discussed possible cooperation within the framework of the SAFE program. Italy is interested in the IMEC corridor and recognizes Cyprus's role in strengthening relations with the countries of the region. Nicosia hopes that the agreement with Italy will further strengthen its position in the European Union.
